Slavna devotes a great amount of energy to detail, lovingly referring to it as “decor terror.” Whether her designs are highly stylized or camp, factual or trash, her efforts are directed towards galvanizing the projection of the performer’s intimate space. She hybrids a strange mix of antique silks, hand embroidery, discarded objects, plastics, and her grandmother’s unending wardrobe - all gloriously crafted, painted, and produced by hand.

Apart from her obsessions with materiality, colour, and space, she never loses sight of the meaning of dress as an extension of a character’s performance of identity and gender, and of the social and sequential specificities that resonate with the tale being told.

Recently, Slavna also collaborated on stage design with director Saar Magal on “Obsessions” at the Burgtheater in Vienna and “Love Me More” at Schauspiel Köln.

Her latest designs include Bizet’s “Carmen,” directed and choreographed by Constanza Macras, conducted by Maxime Pascal at Theater Basel in Switzerland, as well as “Hunger” at the Volksbühne Berlin, also by Macras. Her most recent work is a collaboration with Kirill Serebrennikov on Wagner’s “Das Rheingold,” directed by Serebrennikov and conducted by Kirill Petrenko for the Salzburg Easter Festival.
